Intel (English: Intel Corporation) is the world's second largest semiconductor company and the first company to launch the x86 architecture central processing unit (CPU). It is headquartered in Santa Clara, California, USA. Robert Noyce, Gordon Moore, and Andy Grove co-founded the company on July 18, 1968 under the name of "Integrated Electronics", combining high-end chip design capabilities with industry-leading manufacturing capabilities. Intel also develops motherboard chipsets, network cards, flash memory, graphics chips (GPUs), and products related to communications and computing. The "Intel Inside" advertising slogan, the Pentium series of processors, and the "Wintel" alliance with Microsoft successfully established Intel's brand name in the 1990s. Intel was developing SRAM and DRAM memory chips in the early days, and these memory chips were Intel's main business before the 1990s. In the 1990s, Intel made considerable investments in new microprocessor designs and cultivated the rapidly emerging personal computer (PC) industry. During this period, Intel became the leading supplier of PC microprocessors, and its market positioning was quite aggressive and sometimes controversial, dominating the direction of the PC industry like Microsoft. The Millward Brown Optimor's ranking of the world's most powerful brands in 2007 showed that Intel's brand value dropped 10 places from 15th to 25th. Its main competitors include fabless semiconductor companies AMD and NVIDIA, Samsung Electronics and TSMC, which are also the world's top three semiconductor manufacturers, and Apple, which switched from using Intel processors to developing its own Arm architecture.
